ABSTRACT
Gandhi, Mohandas Karamchand (1869-1948) Leader of the Indian nationalist movement which successfully repelled British colonial rule, Gandhi was born in Porbandar on the western coast of India and had an arranged marriage in the customary Hindu way at the age of thirteen. His wife Kasturbai was his lifelong supporter. At nineteen, he went to England to study law and graduated as a barrister before returning to India in 1891. There his lack of self-confidence led him to accept a post in South Africa, where he felt professional demands were less stringent.
