Thomas, Clarence (1948-) On 1 November 1991, the commission of Clarence Thomas to sit as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court was received. With that appointment, Clarence Thomas became only the second racial minority member to sit on the highest court in the United States. And with that appointment, one of the most controversial, if not the most controversial, nominations to the Supreme Court came to an end.
