ABSTRACT
The high and rising productivity described in the last chapter was achieved in part by increasing specialization or division of labour. Some form of economic specialization has existed from the dawn of history: farmers supplied food to townspeople, makers of textile goods exchanged their products against metal objects through the market, and so on. In recent decades, the division of labour has become much more extensive, sophisticated and efficient.
