ABSTRACT

I indicated in Chapter 3 that conceptualizations of difference can be theorized as partially constitutive of relations of domination, and that a new approach to difference has formed part of utopian feminist projects of emancipation. The approach that conceptualizes difference as deviance from an established norm was portrayed as repressive, being one that relied on dualistic thought which posits an either/or choice. Within the context of Chapter 3, this way of conceiving difference was related to the opposition of difference to equality.
