ABSTRACT

That chapter about the body came first because the body is there to be felt, to be tasted, to be smelt, to be looked at, to be heard. The body is primary in a basic way: it is the subject of our initial first-hand experience. But what makes us human beings isn’t our physicality. It is our language, and what we use it for. It is, indeed, our language that makes us unique. Those most precious words that embody our emotions speak to ourselves and our fellow humans about what we are.
