ABSTRACT

By any standard, John Kenneth Galbraith has had a unique career, combining academic work, public service and popular writing. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, with further work at Cambridge University, his teaching positions included Harvard (since 1949) and Princeton Universities. Other endeavours included: National Defense Advisory Commission; Deputy Administrator, US Office of Price Administration; Editor, Fortune magazine (1943-8); Director of the Strategic Bombing Survey (1946); Director of the Office of Economic Security (1946), and American Ambassador to India (1961-3).
