ABSTRACT
The general sociohistorical framework adopted here requires us to pay particular attention to early observations and documents relating to the various domains discussed. Because of the limited space available in this book, I shall only discuss some of these. Even a work that was more specific could not produce an economical yet exhaustive review of such sources.
