ABSTRACT

Our second case study is a mixed community comprehensive school for 11 to 18 year olds with 1,500 students on roll. It serves a market town and a very spread-out rural community and, as is the case with Beech School, the improvements cannot be attributed to significant changes in its intake. The headteacher joined the school in 1996. The information provided below is taken from the school’s most recent OFSTED report (1997) and from the DfES performance tables. The account of the school’s initiatives to raise pupil attainment was provided by the headteacher of Maple High School and updated with her.
