ABSTRACT
In contrast to the tradition of secular biography, that of sacred biography flourished in Anglo-Saxon England and produced some masterpieces. The greatest scholars of the age, Bede, Ælfric and possibly Byrhtferth, besides other less known but on the whole competent authors, contributed to it. The Anglo-Saxons also produced a number of local histories, that is histories of particular monasteries or ecclesiastical sees.
