ABSTRACT
There is a continuing debate on the strategies to be adopted when designing an excavation. English Heritage’s Management of Archaeological Projects 1991, is required reading for all archaeologists who have responsibility for fieldwork and excavation projects. It is an aid to clear thinking at each stage of a projected piece of work, proposing five stages through which a large archaeological project would normally pass (though there seems to be every reason for applying the same reasoning to small projects also).
