ABSTRACT
Compared with the situation as it was only fifteen years ago, the amount of information which can be added to and deduced from excavated evidence by scientific means is enormous and increases annually. It is instructive to compare the descriptions of techniques in Brothwell and Higgs (1969) and in Sherratt (ed., 1980, 416-32) and Clarke (1990).
