ABSTRACT

1 (Left) Portrait of Dr Jesse Haworth, patron of Egyptology in Manchester, who supported Petrie’s excavations at Illahun, Kahun and Gurob. In recognition of his generosity to the Manchester Museum, and of his position as one of the first patrons of scientific excavation in Egypt, the University of Manchester conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws in 1913. In return for his continuing support of Petrie’s excavations, the Manchester Museum received artefacts from sites throughout Egypt, which form the nucleus of this important collection.
