ABSTRACT

In this last section of the book we will discuss the relationship of politics and language in today’s world and speculate on the future. A postmodern world, a place of globalisation, poses challenges to the conventional role of language politics as it does also to the status of the nation and of nationalism. Within this context we want to examine the likely future for the Spanish language in particular. Questions arise as to whether Spanish can be categorised as a world language and what that means. What will its relationship be with English? To what extent is Spanish still expanding its numbers of mother tongue speakers and is it competing in the global market? And in which parts of the world will the presence of Spanish be more marked and significant?
