ABSTRACT

Have you ever been lost in a strange town and stopped to ask directions? It may have been hard to ‘tune-in’ to a different accent or the rate and complexity of the way the directions were given may have been too overwhelming. How did you feel about having to ask for a slower, more detailed explanation, while trying to relate what was being said to landmarks you recognised or features on the map? What did you do:

Say thank you and go away little the wiser?

Try again, even if the person was becoming impatient with you?

Try to ask someone else and hope they would be easier to understand?
