ABSTRACT
Hackett (1883–1962) was born in Ireland and emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1901, where he eventually became the first literary editor of the NewRepublic in 1914. He compares the novel favourably with Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage, and sides with Dos Passos's implicit condemnation of conscription as undemocratic.
