ABSTRACT
Gross (b. 1912) has written several works of literary criticism, including TheRise and Fall of the Man of Letters, (1969) and a book on Joyce. He also edited The Oxford Book of Aphorisms. Gross has been literary editor of the NewStatesman, editor of the London Times Literary Supplement (1974–82), and is currently an editor for the New York Times Book Review. 1
