ABSTRACT

I began this book by describing my first encounter with rock art, and explained how I had attempted to understand that experience by considering the role that petroglyphs play in other areas of the world. This led me to discuss a variety of approaches drawn from recent research. Many of these will appear again in this and succeeding chapters. But like any account of an experience that took place some time ago, the outlines command more attention than the details. It is to the details that I must turn my attention now.
