ABSTRACT
Despite the changes brought about by the Civil Rights Movement, fifty years after Brown v. Board of Education, historically black colleges and universities have not disappeared, as some predicted they would. However, they do struggle. In 1954, over 90 percent of black students were educated at historically black colleges and universities. Although that figure today is between 15 and 20 percent, more than one hundred historically black colleges and universities are still thriving.
