message, on foot and over a long distance, concerning the Battle of Marathon fought between Persia and Athens in 490 B.C.. Despite problems with the ancient tradition, Pheidippides’ feat of running is still popularly associated with the announcement of the Athenian victory and also with the introduction of the “marathon” race in modern times.
