ABSTRACT

The comprehension of changes over time is one of the elements involved in causal explanation. In fact, the intimate relationship between causality and time is apparent in the very definition of causality as proposed by Hume. This definition evokes the temporal relations, of succession and contiguity, between cause and effect. A number of studies conducted in the field of developmental psychology have revealed this close association of temporal and causal relations. For certain authors, such as Piaget, the knowledge of time is founded on a knowledge of causal relations. However, the majority of authors emphasize the time-dependent nature of causal relations.
