ABSTRACT

Due to its history, Taiwan has always been close to its Overseas subjects and its Overseas Chinese policy is shaped by its experiences before 1949. Indeed, the Nationalist government traces its origins back to the Revive China Society (Xing Zhong hui), founded in November 1894 by Sun Yat-sen in Hawaii. Sun obtained strong support from his Overseas compatriots to help overthrow the Manchu regime early in 1912. Despite ebbs and flows in the fortunes of the Nationalist Party (Guomindang), the Overseas Chinese gave it their support at various times after 1912.
