Housing as history: the development of policy, tenure and finance

The current housing stock is a result of policies implemented over the last century and a half. This section considers:

• the nineteenth-century origins of state intervention • the inter-war boom and the development of council housing • the post-war rise and fall in building and clearance • continuity and change in the 1980s and 1990s.
