ABSTRACT

When we were in the initial stages of planning this book, we titled this, our last chapter, ‘What Makes A Worthwhile Report?’ We believed that we could, at least by the time we finished writing, name qualities that make research writing worthwhile and memorable. Wouldn’t our final reiteration cap what we’d been saying all along? We envisioned providing a logical and understandable set of guiding statements about ‘worthwhility,’ interesting, straightforward and preferably short. Preferably splendid! We were wrong, of course. What got in the way of a seemingly simple task was the writing of this book. Living by Words convinced us of just how complex the whole subject of writing research is and how difficult it really is to bring to words the multiple, often serendipitous, and ever changing experiences that represent ‘researching.’
