ABSTRACT

Added to this only 8 per cent of all primary teachers have received training in physical education over and above the basic professional course. The amount of time allocated to physical education in initial teacher training is repeatedly being cut to accommodate extra time spent on the core subjects. Changes to teacher training as a result of the recommendations made in the Government document Circular 14/93 will have profound effects on the way teachers are trained and physical education may suffer badly in the long run as a result.
