ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on the second phase of the inquiry which, through the conduct of six mini case studies, seeks to document the teaching constructions of practitioners to identify common cultural themes of practice for closer scrutiny in the final phase. It begins with some comment on substance and method, followed by discussion of criteria for selecting participants, analysis and presentation of data, and the identification of cultural themes. The case studies are not reported. Rather, the three emergent cultural themes from this second phase are identified and described. Extracts from five cases are provided to illustrate their pervasiveness, complexity and variation. The sixth case is incorporated into the major case study and illustrations of the cultural themes as they became manifest in that case are reported in Chapter 5 as a means of refocusing the substantive question of the inquiry.
