ABSTRACT
These teachers have a point. In contrast to those who remember their good old school days and wonderful teachers through a veil of nostalgia, only current practitioners know just how time-consuming, difficult, undervalued, and emotionally draining teaching often is. Too often our work can be frustrating, boring, or even dangerous. There may even be times when we question why we ever chose teaching to begin with (if indeed we did choose it!), times when we don’t feel like teaching, or times when we wonder if ‘teacher’ is an increasingly cumbersome mask that hides who we really are. These darker moments make the occasions when we feel quietly satisfied or even delighted by our work and students, the mornings we wake up eager to get into the classroom, or the times we feel pride and a sense of belonging in calling ourselves ‘teacher’ seem all the more significant.
