ABSTRACT

Using data from a project commissioned by the Department of Education for Northern Ireland (DENI) (McKeown et al. 1997), the intention of this chapter is to consider, with respect to the operation of the market and schools’ relationships with their parents, the ways in which a policy that is common to all the UK, but differs in the manner in which it has been implemented, has impacted on the post-primary school system in Northern Ireland.
