ABSTRACT
The aim of this book has been to contrast various forms of regulation of hospital provision over a long time period illustrated, where possible, through the experience of one region. What wider lessons can be drawn from this chronological study? The general themes raised at various stages by this book concern the future role of the hospital, and the appropriate level of hospital provision; the interpretation of the changes described herein; and the financing and governance of hospital care.
