ABSTRACT

All of the mentor relationships described later in this book were developed within the New Beginnings scheme. As we shall see, New Beginnings was a typical example of the engagement mentoring model. It was both a product of the broad economic, social and political context that gave rise to that model, and of the specific social and economic landscape of its local catchment area, especially factors which impacted on young people’s transitions from school. Recognizing this local and institutional context is essential for understanding the mentor relationships discussed in the following chapters.
