ABSTRACT

This book explores the lives of older people residing in different types of urban communities. Three aspects may be highlighted here. The first is the nature of ageing as an urban experience, one constructed around the advantages (and disadvantages) of living in cities. The second is the importance of ‘place’, especially for groups such as older people who are likely to have spent a considerable period of their life in the same neighbourhood. Finally, the research is concerned with people’s experiences and perceptions of change, judged especially from the standpoint of the base line studies in Bethnal Green, Wolverhampton and Woodford.
