ABSTRACT

This therapy could be seen as a bridge that spans psychoanalysis and humanistic therapy in treating disorders of the self. In particular, narcissistic personality disorder.

Self-psychology has its roots in Freudian psychoanalysis and the British object relations school, which were the precursors of Heinz Kohut’s theories. Kohut formulated the concept of drive experiences as opposed to the drive impulses of traditional Freudian thinking. These theories are still being expanded and developed today after Kohut’s death.
