ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to extend the play continuum identified previously, through exploration of how play may be harnessed as a vehicle for deeper social learning and understanding. Taking make-believe play at its core, this chapter explores how drama may become a learning medium for children with autism. In this way, play behaviour demonstrated by children with autism is then a means to an end, not just an end in itself. The chapter presents an inclusive approach to using drama-ineducation that is compatible with mainstream philosophy, and is appropriate for beginners in drama at all levels of ability, whatever their play starting point.
