ABSTRACT

In 1879-1880 the government, as we saw above, passed three general plans for the expansion of Stockholm’s suburbs. The overall idea must have been that if and when these plans were implemented, Stockholm would in principle have expanded to its full extent. This would prove to be a misjudgement – large additional areas of land were later made available, chiefl y as industrial activities were moved out of the city. In addition, more effi cient methods of clearing sites and laying foundations made it possible to use land that had previously been considered impossible to build on.
