The fi rst half of the seventeenth century was a period of awakening and internationalization in the history of Sweden. It was now essential to replace a medieval society with something more in keeping with the times, to make Sweden better equipped to act as a great power, a role that was already foreshadowed in the 1620s, becoming a reality after the successes in the Thirty Years War.
