ABSTRACT

In 1930 the great Swedish writer Ivar Lo Johansson published a novel about his early years in Stockholm. The novel was called simply Kungsgatan. Nothing more was needed. Kungsgatan, along with Sveavägen, Birger Jarlsgatan and Odengatan, were street names which automatically evoked associations with Stockholm as a big city and a metropolis. And perhaps they still do today, at least for those who have ever tried to get to the end of a game of the Swedish version of Monopoly.
