ABSTRACT
Before children can be expected to develop spoken language they need to develop their attention and listening skills. For this reason teachers of the deaf need a knowledge of early language development, as well as amplification and acoustics, in order to encourage appropriate listening behaviour and to maximise the auditory potential of deaf children. This is important for all deaf children, regardless of their mode of communication.
