ABSTRACT

With the introduction of The National Literacy Strategy (DfEE 1998) and The National Numeracy Strategy (DfEE 1999) there has been greater emphasis in England on the teaching of these subjects. Frameworks for teaching suggest that primary school children will have an hour of literacy a day and a daily mathematics lesson lasting between 45 minutes and an hour. Although this is not a legal requirement, it is expected that all children will benefit from these structured teaching sessions.
