ABSTRACT

Although the use of the lecture format in this book is something of an organizing fiction, all of the texts have an occasional and oral origin.

Lecture 1 began as a paper for a conference on Blanchot at the Architectural Association, London, in January 1993, and Section (g) was given as a paper at a conference on Levinas at Loyola University, Chicago, in May 1993. The whole lecture was subsequently presented in three sessions at the Philosophy Faculty, University of Nijmegen, in February 1995. Section (e) was presented as a paper at a Doctoral Seminar in Philosophy at the Université de Paris XII (Créteil) in March 1995 and at the Nordic Summer School in Comparative Literature in Helsingør in June 1995. Thanks to Carolyn Gill, Adriaan Peperzak, Philippe Van Haute, Michel Haar and Arne Melberg.
