ABSTRACT
The purpose of such research is to describe the culture and life style of the group of people being studied in a way that is as faithful as possible to the way they see it themselves and to the social contexts in which their behaviour occurs. The idea is not so much to seek causes and explanations, as is often the case with survey-style research, but rather to ‘tell it like it is’, to capture what Brewer (2000) notes are ‘social meanings and ordinary activities’ (p. 6).
