ABSTRACT
Medieval kings required ports to have available a certain number of ships for naval duties or war. Most of the ships were merchant ships, and whilst the navy lists are not a complete inventory of all ships, they give a good idea of the importance of ports and distribution of ships. Detailed lists survive from the 14th century and show huge variation in the requirements for up to 180 ports per year.
