ABSTRACT
The royalist strategy for 1648 included the revival of royalist military fortunes in Ireland as well as in Britain. The Marquis of Ormond hoped to unite all antiparliamentarian factions in Ireland to destroy the parliamentarian garrisons and then intervene in Britain. The king confirmed Ormond’s position as Lord Lieutenant and ‘commissioned him to try again to reach a peace with the Irish’, before sending him on to Paris to confer with the Queen and the French government.1 Ormond undertook this new effort because of significant changes then taking place in the political climate in Confederate Ireland.
