ABSTRACT

When you study from a textbook, quite a lot of the book is devoted to explaining the background to each topic and any technical terms. Pick up a research paper, however, and it is likely that the first words you read will be jargon, relying on previous knowledge. Even the title can be intimidating. The experience is not unlike watching your first episode of a long-running soap opera. Who is Ryan’s real father? Why does Tina hate Ashley so much? And what does the Seafront Diner have to do with Slammer’s prison sentence?
