ABSTRACT

When a new head is appointed other changes in staffing are sometimes necessary. A previous head may have been aware of underperforming staff but was unwilling to embark on capability procedures in the run up to her retirement. On the other hand she may have become less acutely aware of the teachers’ performance as the years had gone by and did not realise that standards were no longer as high as they ought to be. Further staffing changes would be triggered by the need to bring the school up to date with current management needs: clear lines of management in response to performance management requirements or the development of the roles of SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) or assessment co-ordinator have been recent aspects of staff restructuring. Other staff changes could be expected in order to straighten up the school’s finances or release part of the staffing budget to give more flexibility – perhaps away from senior management into recruitment and retention.
