ABSTRACT

As we have commented several times in sections above, many heads go on to second and third headships. Since many achieve their first headship in their late thirties or early forties it is very likely that they will want at least one change of environment in the twenty years’ career still left to them. Some now take a break between headships, a strategy that in the recent past (and in some LEAs currently) would have had an adverse effect on the head’s career, and there may still be some resistance by governors and other selectors to appoint if candidates are over 50. What then are the options for those who have been in the same job for some time?
