ABSTRACT

Turning from solutions which need the impetus of government to succeed, we turn to more individual decisions which headteachers and prospective headteachers can make themselves.

Better preparation during pre-headship career and less reliance on a course before headship

It is clear from any consideration of the forms of knowledge, including process knowledge, which are needed by headteachers, that preparation involves more than attending courses. It is also clear that this preparation needs to start well before headship. In the past, the discussion has polarised between the advantages of training courses compared to experience rather than recognising that many kinds of activities have their vital parts to play:

• Award-bearing courses • Training courses • Experience in schools (and reflection on it).
