ABSTRACT

This chapter considers developments in CAA which go beyond the format of objective test-style questions. Although the majority of CAA which takes place in higher education is in the form of objective tests, there is an increasing number of examples of CAA which do not rely on such methods. Among these are systems which assess computer programming skills, evaluate project work and simulate the assessment of fieldwork. Additionally, CAA-related activities are increasingly being explored alongside the use of virtual learning environments and computer-mediated communication. This chapter also addresses the electronic marking of essays and the potential use of gaming techniques for assessment.
