ABSTRACT

This module is concerned with identifying ways of enabling development towards scientific understanding at an appropriate level. Children acquire and develop ideas informally, through everyday experience. In Module 1, consideration was given to the importance of children’s own interpretations of their observations. In a formal classroom setting, not only can children’s understanding be explored and extended but, as discussions and interpretations of their experiences progress, between teacher and children and between children themselves, so possibilities for practical investigations can emerge.
