Reputations are hard won and easily lost. A hasty word or ill-considered remark can damage weeks of careful relation-building work. It pays to be cautious when speaking to parents, as a casual comment may be taken very seriously by them in a way that you never intended. Nevertheless, if you are pleasant and responsive in your dealings with other adults they will soon warm to you.
