ABSTRACT

Some trainees imagine that they have to put on an artificial voice when they talk to children. In fact, it is important to speak naturally but clearly and with authority. Apart from anything else, using an unnatural voice often leads to throat problems. It pays to spend time improving the way you speak to children. Your voice tone should be relaxed and pleasant, inviting dialogue. Talking at children in a scolding and detached manner should rarely, if ever, be used, even when dealing with a blatant transgression of the rules. See Chapter 8 for more information about use of the voice.
