ABSTRACT

An apprentice alcoholic attends several meetings a week…At these meetings old-timers give testimony about their drinking past and the course of the process of becoming sober. In addition to ‘general meetings,’ where old-timers may tell polished, hourlong stories-months and years in the making-of their lives as alcoholics, there are also smaller ‘discussion meetings,’ which tend to focus on a single aspect of what in the end will be a part of the reconstructed life story [of the apprentice].11
